MARCELLA DETROIT

This week my guest on JazzBites is an American musician, singer/songwriter, and accomplished artist revered by her peers since starting out in show business as a teenager in the 70s. With a powerful reputation of excellence on both sides of the Atlantic as a consummate performer, she's worked with the best in show business and the Who's Who of Pop & Rock such as Bob Seger, Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, Leon Russell, Burt Bacharach, Alice Cooper, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Bette Midler, and Elton John to name but a few. In the early nineties she co-formed the chart-topping duo Shakespear's Sister breaking all records for an all-female band after reaching No. 1 in the UK charts for eight long weeks with the superb single <STAY> - a record that still stands after 25 years. Today, she talks to JazzBites on the phone from her home in LA, California, about her incredible musical journey stretching over four decades, why she strives for perfection in all she does, the meaningful lyrics which have become her hallmark, her latest album and the story behind the songs, the surprise at being invited to appear in the hit TV show ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS by Jennifer Saunders, being an angel to Marianne Faithful, and hitting the high notes singing opera with Jimmy Osmond.
