SIMON LASKY

THE STORY INSIDE

This week my guest on JazzBites is a classically-trained pianist, composer, lecturer, and recording artist. For the past fifteen years he's lived a double life as a composer of contemporary classical music and sideman to some of the UK's leading Jazz vocalists and instrumentalists. His debut album last year was described in the media as 'nine tracks of impassioned improvisation which provide a showcase of pure skill and talent" and it goes without question. Today he talks about what inspires him as a composer, his commitment to encourage young minds with his knowledge and passion for music, and his own very special STORY INSIDE.

PRESS & REVIEWS FOR SIMON LASKY GROUP DEBUT ALBUM:

“Simon, your music is very melodic and very beautiful.” [CHUCHO VALDES, Ronnie Scott’s, July 2015]

“Exceptionally good debut album by Simon Lasky.” [JazzFM, ‘The Cutting Edge’ show, February 2016]

“Story Inside feels like a paean to well-constructed, uncluttered composition and honest-to-goodness musical texture.” ROB MALLOWS, ‘London Jazz News’ CD review, October 2015]

“4/5stars; Excellent; Lasky has a classical grounding and it shows but he also understands jazz and there is a freshness to this music which is lacking in many contemporaries.” [SAMMY STEIN, ‘Kind Of Jazz’ CD review, February 2016]

“Lasky’s music is atmospheric, melodic, airy, thoughtful and often influenced by the Pat Metheny Group without being too derivative. The musicians’ mellow tones and the laidback nature of the music means that the results are relaxing but they are also filled with subtle creativity with much of the heat being directly below the surface. ‘Story Inside’ will grow on listeners and is well worth exploring.” [SCOTT YANOW album review, appearing in July 2015 edition of the ‘Los Angeles Jazz Scene’]

“Pianist and composer Simon Lasky leads his consummate 6-piece outfit across nine new tracks of impassioned improvisation, all of which showcase the skill and talent of this first class collective.“ [KEITH AMES album review, appearing in ‘The Musician’, Autumn 2015]

“The debut album by The Simon Lasky Group is an eye-opening snapshot of the wonderfully diverse and creative music being performed in the UK at this time.” [PAUL JOLLY, director ’33 Jazz’ Records]
